‘The singing trees’
During a walk in the woods around Ede and Lunteren, they became fascinated by the irregular growths on many of the trees. These proliferations are of unparalleled beauty.
Lanters and Lee made silicone rubber molds and wax casts of various knots and attached them like ornaments to various tree trunks. The trees are arranged in a circle around an old gravel pit. The soft yellow color of the 25 objects is reminiscent of the underground mycelium network that allows trees to communicate with each other and is also known as the Wood Wide Web. We could easily imagine the trees using the tactile resin knots as instruments to make music with each other.
We are listening to a choir of trees: Arbores Cantare.
With their intervention, Lee and Lanters create a magical place, where they make us aware of the sublime nature.
From now on, when walking (or cycling) in the forest, we’ll look at knotholes with a different eye.
