Cross eyed viewing is a variation on free-viewing where the images are deliberately transposed right to left and left to right. Raising a finger halfway between the image and your eyes then focusing on the tip of your finger will cross your eyes. The images will be out of focus so if you then move your finger towards the images concentrating on the finger tip the images can be brought into focus and merge.

Carel Lanters en Jan Wierda werkten jaren samen onder de naam “De Realisten” met het medium stereofotografie.

De stichting werd opgericht in 1997 en beëindigd in 2017.

Zij maakten stereoscopische opnamen en presenteerden deze in installaties en tentoonstellingen. Hiervoor werd de Realist stereocamera intensief ingezet.

Een veel gebruikt middel is de Wheatstone-opstelling waarbij de toeschouwer via twee spiegels twee bijna gelijke afbeeldingen bekijkt (één per oog). Het brein maakt van deze twee beelden vervolgens één 3D-beeld.

Carel ontwikkelt dit medium verder, met name door zwart-wit-diamateriaal te gebruiken. Ook gebruikt hij pinhole-camera’s om een ruimtelijk beeld te creëren.
